Like Father…..Like Daughter
Father and daughter team up for success on the speedway. Above, Laymond Wolford helps daughter, Betty Ruth, align up the quarter midgets front end. With no sons, dad gave Betty Ruth a chance behind the wheel, she is now one of the top drivers. Below, Preliminaries and preparations over, the 13 young drivers await the fall of the flag to start the race. They make up for enthusiasm what they lack in size. Deacon and Pope
This photograph taken in Middletown Springs, VT, dates to July 7, 1907 which was the 100th birthday of the passenger sitting in this nearly new Pope Hartford. The passenger was Deacon Alpheus Haynes, and the car’s owner was Benjamin C. Buxton. Townspeople gave Haynes the gold headed cane on this great occasion, and to this day, the oldest resident of the town is entrusted with the cane. For anyone to have reached the age of 100 in that era is quite remarkable, and we have the Middletown Springs Historical Society to thank for sharing this photograph with us.
