Photos From the AACA Library – A Studebaker Touring Car with a California Top


Before factory-built, fully enclosed bodies became widely available, a market developed for an accessory that promised the best of both worlds to the automobilist who owned an open car: the pleasures of fresh air motoring when conditions allowed and improved comfort, weather protection and visibility when they did not. Gould Tops was one the best known manufacturers of the California Top, as they were generally known, but our photo shows a Studebaker sporting a one produced by a different establishment.

An article we found in February 10, 1910 issue of the Los Angeles Herald mentions that “Charles Link, superintendent of the top factory at Chanslor-Lyon Company, is just back from the Chicago (auto) show, where he imbibed all the new things for the benefit of his employers.” Chanslor & Lyon was an early aftermarket parts distributor in the west and Link apparently took over their top manufacturing division after 1921. This car has been identified as a Studebaker, but we invite you to send in a comment telling us exactly what year and model it is and to take a minute to learn about the services at the AACA Library.

  1. This appears to be a ’23-’24 (they were virtually the same) Big Six
    model EK. The six wheeled ones were known as the Speedster. They
    cost $1,850, were 126″ wheelbase, and had a 353.8 cubic inch 60HP
    motor. Most Sheriffs in Arizona used Big Sixes because of their speed
    and endurance. In 1923 total Studebaker sales were 150,000, enough
    for seventh place.

  2. One must wonder if the ownership change came about because of the death in Texas of Fred M. Lyon as reported in the February 23, 1922 issue of Motor Age. Charles W. Link was appointed to the top post at Chanslor & Lyon Top Company in 1920 after being the manager there for 12 years. The Coachbuilt website has an article about the firm, patent drawings, and pictures of some of the designs of Link.
