For a car built in small quantities in Massachusetts, the Stanley was surprisingly popular in the Midwest, perhaps because farmers were thoroughly familiar with steam from their traction engines and threshing equipment. John H. Wright was the main distributor in Iowa and a crack salesman. His demonstration stunts were the stuff of legend. Even more dramatic than this 45 percent grade was his racing an Illinois Central train in reverse – and winning. In 1914 he moved east, to run the Stanley branch in Philadelphia.
