DePalma And Hartz At Indianapolis – 1929

Ralph DePalma And Harry Hartz

Both Ralph DePalma and Harry Hartz in this press photo dated May 16, 1929, according to the caption, were looking for a car to run in the upcoming 500. Hartz had broken a leg in a previous race and was still walking with a cane. I turns out that both men and possibly the car did not make the race. DePalma’s last 500 was in 1925 when he finished 7th.

Hartz a previous champion, had his final run in the 500 in the 1927 when he went out with crankshaft problems. The last Miller with this number ran in the 1928 race driven by Johnny Seymour and went out on the 170th lap with supercharger problems finishing 17th. Photo courtesy of Racemaker Press.

  1. There is another photo of the same #33 with Harry Hartz in the exact spot in the Jack Fox Indy 500 book with the 1929 race coverage. Car #33 was a Bill White car that Myron Stevens wrecked in practice. Chances are very good that Stevens built the body originally, and most likely repaired it after the wreck.
