The Haynes Vanderbilt Cup Racer Takes on a New Life

This Haynes evidently finished fifth in the 1905 Vanderbilt Elimination Race held on Sept. 23, 1905, which was a qualifying race for the Vanderbilt Cup held on Oct. 14, 1905. It was a stock chassis 40 h.p. car with a 5.00″x 6.00″ bore & stroke.

After finishing forth and having earned a starting position in the race, The Cup Commission (see 4th photo below from the Peter Helck book The Checkered Flag) decided to take matters into their own hands and replaced the 3rd, 4th and 5th place winners with three “deemed as better fitted” The Haynes was out of the race and overnight it was turned into a used car. We thought it was quite amusing to read the press release on the back of the photo, that you can view below. Excerpt from the Checkered Flag courtesy of the Helck family. Photo The Old Motor.
