We are in the middle of winter and thought this would be a great time to show you one of the most bizarre forms of human involvement with motor sport. This short film from 1955, shot on a lake in the Bavarian Alps, shows automobile and motorcycle races on ice on ice towing, yes Virginia, real thriller seekers on skis at up to 100 m.p.h. Via The Chicane.

What could possibly go wrong there?
Okay. This is just nuts. Some serious brass kahunas to do this kind a stuff. Not the safety gear these skiers wear. I think the grand dads and maybe occasional grand ma who were doing this, this sport? probably laugh at the “X” sport gang.
Wonder what kind of sports car the winning team was driving for 1955?
On second look, and freeze frame, I see what appears to be an air filter sticking outside the modified body. Possibly a Porsche?
Looks like an Otto Mathe Porsche Special.

Thanks Paul, interesting car. I imagine there weren’t to many of them made.
