*Updated* The Mobil Oil Company Driving Game, 1960s excess and the end of the line for the De Soto

*Update* Reader Kevin Preston found that this photo was taken at the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair and Pat Dzejachok, “Miss Century 21″ is on the stage is telling the other models how this game works. Ed Sosteck, the show manager is on the left assisting. In the game 12 drivers competed to get the best fuel economy by solving driving situations that appeared on screen in front of them. The other models from the left are Toni Sosteck, Doreen Andre, Beverly Jackie Smith & Carolyn Manley. The cockpits appear to be from 1962 Dodge Polara 500′s.

The Mobil Oil Company driving game photo (above), dated 1962, is some-thing that we need our readers help to find out more about. We don’t know if it was from a TV show or if it might have been at some kind of exhibition and if so, we thought one possibility might be the Worlds Fair held in 1962 in Seattle. Assuming that the bucket seats, steering wheel and dash assemblies came from one automaker, can anyone identify them or tell us more about the photo?

And while we are looking at early 1960s excess, get a good look at this 1961 De Soto front end photo (below) of the last year that the model was to be built. From what we were able to find out, the De Soto may have been a victim of bad corporate management and a recession which started in 1958, which seriously affected mid-priced automobiles. Sales of the De Soto were on the skids in 1959 and 1960 which seems to have lead to the Chrysler Corporations decision to make 1961, the last year the model was to be built. The De Soto Division of  Chrysler, was first began in late 1928, started production with the 1929 model. Both photos are Via, These Americans.

And while we are on the subject of the De Soto, let’s take a good look at the most famous De Soto photo ever (below), showing model Shirley Buchanan and the De Soto “Fire Dome” hemi V-8 at the 1952, Los Angeles, California, International Auto Show. The photo was first published in the Los Angeles Daily News, on March 7, 1952.
